Samsung Omnia 2 Mobile Phone Reviewed

by Stephen Mymob

The Samsung Omnia II runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and boasts of the latest Touch Wiz user interface (UI). The 3.7-inch big screen has a resolution of 480x800 pixels. The AMOLED screen gives the best picture quality seen so far in phones. The Omnia II is fully loaded with ARM11 scries processor running at a speed of 800MHz.

The processor is powerful enough to run Windows 6.5 which is important since, Onmia II OS can be updated to WM 6.5. The front panel of the phone is largely occupied by the screen. The top of the screen has the earpiece and the secondary camera for video confer¬encing. At the bottom of the screen are the three keys for calling, back/homescreen and power end. The left side of the phone just has the volume rocker. The screen lock is on the top right and below it is the multi-purpose key for camera and the 3D gate keys. The 3D gate key opens entertainment applications on a 3D cube with each face des¬ignated for accessing different applications. On the top of the phone is the multi-purpose port for charging and data connectivity. Next to it is the 3.5 mm jack. The back of the phone has the 5.0-megapixel camera coupled with a dual LED flash.

House Of Apps

The Samsung Omnia II comes with lots of new applications. The Touch Player has an interesting interface and a very user-friendly menu. The player also allows users to change the play speed, or play through the 'Connected Home' application. Some audio effects can be changed according to users' taste.

The Omnia comes with a feature that turns the phone into a digital frame with slide show of pictures along with utilities like clock and calendar. The 'midomi' application is a music search engine which records a sample and searches its t itle and artist name. The Omnia II is the first Samsung Windows device to feature this application, which works very smoothly.

'Connected Home' is similat to DLNA feature and needs a Wi-Fi connection. Another interesting application is 'Qik', which enables users to share video clips directly with their contacts on the phone.

Being a Windows Mobile device, the Samsung Omnia II comes with a complete suite of Mobile Office application, including OneNote Mobile and Adobe Reader LE. It also sports smart reader for business card and document scanning.

The Samsung Omnia II has a 5.0-megapixel camera with dual flash. It gives decent quality pictures outdoors as well as indoors. Though the indoor results need some enhancements. The dual flash range seems a little limited when taking distant shots. The camera comes with a handful of settings and enhancements. There are six shooting modes, including panorama and action. The macro mode in the set¬tings allows users to shoot close-ups. Videos can be shot at a maximum resolution of 720x480 pixels, which is quite a quality for a mobile camera. The video mode is also capable of shooting in a high frame per second (fps) to give a slow-motion video. The Omnia II can also play back DivX, XviD, MPEG4, H.263, H.264,

WMV formats while the recording is done in MPEG4/H.263, which is a high definition format. The phone is loaded with default Windows Media player and FM radio. The sound quality of the device is decent.

Staying Connected

The FM signal reception of the Samsung Omnia II is good. The Wi-Fi connectivity is fast and easy thanks to the dual 802.11b/g channel. Overall, the battery performance of the device is quite good. A single charge lasts two days with Wi-Fi usage, occasional listening to music, viewing videos and mak¬ing and receiving calls for three hours.
