CDMA Versus GSM Whats Right For You
by William Gold
It's amazing what they've come up with to be used with a cell phone, stuff from the Didn't Know You Needed It Department. But the most amazing accessory of them all is something that's been totally overlooked, from the Didn't Even Know It Was An Accessory Department! It's definitely not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of cellular accessories, but then that's the whole point of an article like this, to be informative!
Of course, as you've probably guessed already, what's about to be revealed depends entirely on semantics (or did you not notice the "scary quotes" earlier?). The first thing to consider, then, is, what do cellular accessories do, anyway? Well, they help you use your cell phone better somehow and/or enhance your experience of the device. Unlocking your phone is not a physical accessory, but a service that is performed, but it definitely enhances your overall experience! More than carrying cases or belt clips, unlocking your GSM cell phone is the ultimate in must-have cellular accessories.
Many carriers like to lock their phones so they won't work with SIM cards from another company. Unlocking your phone means to reverse that programming so that it can work with a SIM card from another company.
You see, many kinds of cellular technology are available, the most common one in the United States being CDMA. Worldwide, however, most countries use GSM primarily, or even exclusively. As a user, it doesn't matter in terms of your call itself; clarity and coverage will be the same when all else are equal. However, if you decide one day to switch service providers it will make quite a difference in terms of your convenience, unless you will throw away your phone, which you shouldn't anyway but should recycle instead.
Now, each cell phone contains a serial number that is used by your carrier to identify your account. The carrier knows that a particular phone is your phone through this serial number, and is able to route calls to your phone through that identifying information. GSM cell phones do not contain the identifying information themselves, but have instead removable Subscriber Information Module (SIM) cards that contain the necessary information. This means that you can put any SIM card into any GSM phone when switching carriers. You simply stick the new SIM card from your new carrier into your existing phone!
That's the theory, anyway, if your GSM phone is unlocked, which it likely isn't. That's why having your phone unlocked is the ultimate must-have accessory!
