How to Make a Good Impression on the First Day of College

by Darrell Santos

The first day of my college life was a surreal blur. I was like a lost duck in the middle of nowhere. I didn't know whom to talk to. Add to the fact that i am shy person, Hell! I felt miserable. It really affected my self confidence and it also had long term effects with regards to my self-esteem. I started the first day of my college life without making any friends. But lucky you are indeed because I am hear to enlighten you with tested and proven tips on how to not endure what I did. Trust me on these tips. These are based on my experiences. Surely, you wont go wrong with them.

First and foremost, Never ever enter a classroom without talking to anybody, and i mean never! Don't sit at the back of the classroom and grab your cellphone to pretend your enjoying the company of some texter. Even though you have an iPhone or a Nokia 6720 classic, you will look like a loner and a freak. Your cellphone wont save you. On the contratry, if you actually do that, people would feel that you're arrogant and you wouldn't want to talk to them. I know it's hard to talk to new people especially if they look elite, rich and good-looking. But remember, it's also their first day and they too are probably feeling anxious as you are. I strongly suggest to talk to someone you have a good impression on and just say anything. anything at all! you could say, "Hi! is this room 320 of the biology building? I'm not quite sure. its my first day here. I'm a freshman." Before you know it, you guys would be talking like best friends. Once you get to talk with someone you'll be fine. Keep the conversation burning but don't concentrate too much on what to say next. Usually if your too conscious on what to say next, you wouldn't get to say anything at all. Good conversations come naturally.

Next, you don't have to possess all the latest and most expensive gadgets in order to be called cool. That's a crappy mentality. Your social skills is the best asset you have. use it to the best of your ability. try cracking a few jokes with your new classmates. Although it may seem corny to you, at least you gave it a try and your classmates would actually think that you are fun to be with.

I don't need to say to always smile. That should have been the first thing you have done before entering the room. That's like given in a mathematical equation. You dont need to be reminded regarding things like that. Smiling means that you like a person; You want to know him or be with him.

Don't bombard a new friend with personal questions. You guys just met each other. Asking him or her questions like, Whats your fathers job? How much is your lunch money? What did you have for breakfast? are usually intimidating and for some people they could be insulting. Try telling stuff about your own personal life. Tell an exciting or fun story which you think would interest other people. You wouldn't have nothing to tell. For sure there has been an interesting incident in your life that happened. It could be how you managed to get out of an overcrowded train this morning , or even how you chose management as your course. Just be careful not to sound ego centric or self centered. Let others share their stories too. You're not the only person who wants to talk.

Be mindful of your gestures and facial expressions. If you are a person who blinks a lot, or makes weird hand movements, try to restrain those awkward gestures to the best of your ability. Gestures like these are disturbing. It would be hard on the part of the person you're talking to if you act like that. They would feel scared. Most likely, they wouldnt be talking to you the next day. Trust me on that one too. Be relaxed. Its not like you're having a recorded interview with Bill Gates.

About the Author

After following all these tips, I guess one last advice exists out there. Without it, following the tips above would be useless. The most important advice of them all is to be true to yourself. Be sincere and show your true personality. Nobody wants to be with pretentious people. Being pretentious is the worst thing you could do in college. You wont be happy trying to be someone you're not. Trust me on that one because I have proven that with other people. They ended up dropping out of school because nobody wanted to talk to them. It doesn't matter if you small, poor, or handicapped. As long as you're being the true person you really are, people would genuinely be interested in you.
